This two-day course will focus on techniques for hand-building with porcelain, and explore ways to combine ceramics with mixed media and found-objects to create unique compositions.
We will explore techniques for using nature as inspiration for pieces using porcelain, including; modelling pieces inspired by natural forms; pinching; rolling; using coloured porcelain and slips; and using nichrome wire. You will also investigate how mixed media and found objects (such as twigs, feathers, seed pods, or beach finds) can be used and combined with porcelain pieces you make. Running the course over two Saturdays allows for a firing in-between and means you can use your fired pieces in the second session.
- The first day will focus on working with porcelain to create unique pieces; investigating creating porcelain pieces for a composition and/or vessels for adding mixed media handles
- There will be a firing in-between
- When you return for the second day, we will focus on working with found objects and investigating ways to combine these with your ceramics to create a unique composition or mixed-media piece
The sessions are suitable for all including beginners up to advanced level. If you’d like to explore hand-building with porcelain and find ways to combine your pieces with mixed-media, this is for you. The workshop is for up to four people so the group size is small and friendly with lots of personal attention.
The course will be held over two Saturdays 10am -5pm – the dates for 2024 are to be confirmed. If you are interested in the course, send me an email to be added to the waiting list.
The workshop includes an individual workspace in my studio amongst only a small group of participants (between 4 and 6 people). The sessions include as much clay as you need to work with and your small finished pieces* will be fired by me in the intervening week. I will have a selection of found materials and mixed-media which the group can make use of. You are also encouraged to bring your own found and natural materials for using in the workshop – examples include driftwood or twigs, interesting leaves and seeds, beach finds, thread, etc.
Refreshments including tea and biscuits will be provided throughout the day. Lunch isn’t provided but you are welcome to bring a packed lunch or visit one of the many cafes nearby.
£450 per person for the course
The sessions will be at my studio in Brighton at 51 Providence Place BN1 4GE, just off the Lewes Raod. The studio is less than 10 minutes walk from Brighton railway station, there are lots of bus routes that stop nearby and there is a carpark a few minuites walk away.
After booking, your place on the course may be cancelled by you up to three weeks before the start with a full refund. For course cancellations within three weeks, I’m sorry I won’t be able to offer a refund unless I am able to fill your booking with someone else.
Please bear in mind I won’t be able offer a reduction or refund for missed dates.
In the unlikely event I need to cancel the whole course for whatever reason I will offer a full refund. If the course doesn’t have sufficient numbers of participants to run, the course may be cancelled or postponed with the option for a refund.
