Porcelain and mixed media 2-day workshop – 3rd and 10th August 2024

£450.00

Come to this small and friendly two-day course focusing on techniques for hand-building with porcelain, and explore ways to combine ceramics with mixed media and found-objects to create unique compositions.

We will look at techniques for using nature as inspiration for pieces using porcelain, including; modelling pieces inspired by natural forms; pinching; rolling; using coloured porcelain and slips; and using nichrome wire. You will also investigate how mixed media and found objects (such as twigs, seed pods, or beach finds) can be used and combined with porcelain pieces you make. Running the course over two Saturdays allows for a firing in-between and means you can use your fired pieces in the second session.

The course will be held over two Saturdays – 3rd and 10th August 2024.

About:
This two-day course will focus on techniques for hand-building with porcelain, and explore ways to combine ceramics with mixed media and found-objects to create unique compositions.

  • The first Saturday will focus on working with porcelain to create unique pieces; making porcelain pieces such as spoons, flowers, twigs and nature-inspired pieces for a composition, and make pinch pots for adding mixed media handles
  • There will be a firing in-between
  • When you return for the second Saturday, we will focus on working with found objects and mixed media – investigating ways to combine these with your ceramics to create a unique wall composition or mixed-media piece. We will fix pieces together and use wire, thread, and sometimes glue. We will work with hand drills, pliers and other tools in the process and come away with unique pieces.

Students will typically come away with porcelain pinch pots with twig or wire handles, one or two small wall pieces (ready for framing), combining porcelain and natural materials, or unique three dimensional mixed media sculptures using their own found objects and pieces they have made.

The two days will be creatively inspiring, allowing you to play with materials and encouraging your ideas to flow.

Who:
The workshop is for up to four people so the group size is small and friendly with lots of personal attention. The sessions are suitable for all. If you’d like to explore hand-building with porcelain and find ways to combine your pieces with mixed-media, this is for you. The tasks do require a certain amount of working on a small scale and with tools, so some manual dexterity is required.

When:
The course will be held over two Saturdays 10am -5pm on the 3rd and 10th August 2024.

Resources:
The sessions include as much clay as you need to work with and your small finished pieces* will be fired by me in the intervening week. I will have a selection of found materials and mixed-media which the group can make use of, but you are encouraged to bring your own found and natural materials for using in the workshop – examples include driftwood or twigs, interesting leaves and seeds, beach finds, thread, etc.

Lunch will be provided and refreshments including tea and biscuits will be available throughout the day.

Price:
£450 per person for the course

This includes firing and all materials used during the 2-day workshop

Where:
The sessions will be at my studio in Ditchling Common. The studio is less than 5 minutes drive from Burgess Hill or Ditchling, and there is free parking on site.
