Six Week Handbuilding Course

Weekly small-group hand-building sessions with specialist guidance from Elaine in working with porcelain and stoneware.

Fridays 10.00am – 12.30pm
– Autumn sessions: 04 Sept – 16 Oct
– Winter sessions: 06 Nov – 11 Dec
The sessions are for a small group of 4 students per class. The topics are guided by you and your interests but suggested techniques include:
  • making botanical influenced pieces in porcelain
  • making vessels in porcelain paper clay
  • working with mixed media
  • decorating with slips, using oxides, and colouring clay
New ideas and processes will be highlighted and demonstrated by Elaine throughout the course or you are welcome to pursue your own ideas with full support and guidance.
This course generally attracts those who are not complete beginners to ceramics but may be new to handbuilding with porcelain or would like to explore their skills in ceramics a little further.

Where

The studio is in a beautiful old converted barn on the edge of Ditchling Common with on-site parking and can be reached easily from Ditchling and Burgess Hill by bike or car.

In the studio, there is a stool for each of you around a central workbench and all the ceramic materials and handbuilding tools you will need, plus teas and coffee available.

How much  

£360 per person for a block of six sessions each 2.5 hrs long

The cost includes clay, glazes and firings *

What will we do 

I will demonstrate techniques as well as guiding you in what you’d like to make. The sessions will be tailored to you as much as possible but will also look at:

  • making botanical influenced pieces in porcelain
  • making vessels in porcelain paper clay
  • working with mixed media
  • decorating with slips, using oxides, and colouring clay

Following on from the course, If you wish to book further handbuilding dates, you can continue with the classes and expand on what you have learned.

Glazing and Firing

You will be encouraged to learn how to glaze your own work, with help from Elaine if needed. Items made during the six week course will then be fired for you and all fired work will be available to be collected from the studio within six weeks of the end of the course.

* Please note, very large pieces, sets of multiple plates and/or large quantities of work made may have to be charged a little extra if necessary. This can be discussed during the sessions.
