The piece is made from stoneware and thrown on the potter’s wheel with a grey slip added to the surface. The vessel is high-fired with a speckled glaze on the surface giving the outside of the vessel a speckled grey tone and satin sheen. After firing, Natural materials are gathered to complement the piece; for this vessel a bundle of willow twigs has been added to small lops on the rim.
The work is inspired by the colours and tones of the Sussex landscape where the flint and chalk fields of the South Downs provide a distinctive backdrop. The addition of willow, twigs, twine and other natural materials in my collection further connects my work to the local landscape and, for me, represents a connection to place and an enduring sense of home and belonging.
